Creating your First Apps

Much like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book that you read as a kid, there are a couple of different paths that you can go down once you begin to create your own apps! However, unlike those Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books that most often ended up with the protagonist in an unfortunate situation, no matter what path you take with Loco, you're going to end up with something great.

So, let's get right into it and start making things happen!

Option 1: Keep it Simple

As you're starting to get the hang of Loco, it can be extremely helpful to keep it simple and start in the App Library. Once you've navigated to the App Library, you'll be able to see dozens of pre-built applications that are ready to be installed. Since you can install as many as you'd like, pick out your favorites and start exploring them!

If you click through the pre-built decks and go into the App's editing screen, you can get a feel for how Decks, Sets, Properties, and Cards work! Once you begin to get the hang of it, you'll start to generate your own ideas for apps you can build.

Option 2: Kick it up a Notch

Once you've started downloading pre-built apps from the App Library, it's a good idea to try customizing these apps into something that you can use more effectively. By exploring all the features that you can customize from an app that's been created by someone else, you can edit a field, save the app, then open the app and see how your change affected the fields in the cards, rules, or reports! This will familiarize you even more and get you ready to make your own app from scratch. Which brings us to Option 3...

Option 3: No-Code Ninja

You've installed, you've explored, and you've mastered the ideas of decks, properties, sets, and cards! When you've decided to make your own apps completely from scratch, you're putting your data completely back into your own hands. While clicking that big orange Plus Sign on the top of your screen may seem intimidating, you definitely have the skills to handle it. You'll be presented with a blank app that's waiting for you to start filling in the basics!

Once you've given your app a name and a description, you can conquer the decks and properties of your app!

Here is a blank deck...

And here is a deck all filled in:

And you're on your way!

When you're filling in your decks, remember that the properties you add are the empty fields that show up when you go to create a new card.

Once you've begun to add your properties, you're on your way to entering data! It may take some practice to make your own apps from scratch, but once you get rolling, you won't be able to stop.

Looks like this choose-your-own-adventure turned out pretty well :)

Enjoy, citizen developer! We can't wait to see what you create.
